Europe’s New Entry/Exit System launches Oct. 12: What you need to know
Beginning Oct.12, 2025, the European Union will roll out its new Entry/Exit System (EES)—a digital upgrade designed to tighten security and streamline border crossings for non-EU nationals.
The EES will replace manual passport stamping with automated registration of travellers’ entry and exit data. Upon arrival, travellers will have their fingerprints and facial image captured, along with passport details and travel dates. This biometric data will be stored securely for up to three years.
The system applies to all short-stay visits (up to 90 days within any 180-day period) to Schengen Area countries. Travellers should ensure their passports are valid for at least three months beyond their planned departure date and be prepared for biometric checks at border kiosks. While the process is expected to be quick, first-time entries may take longer.
